Joseph Kosuth is one of the pio­neers of Con­cep­tu­al and instal­la­tion art, ini­ti­at­ing lan­guage based works and appro­pri­a­tion strate­gies. At the heart of his pur­suit is inves­ti­gat­ing the pro­duc­tion, rela­tion­ship, and role of lan­guage and mean­ing through art.

For more than 50 years, Kosuth’s works have tak­en the form of instal­la­tions, muse­um exhi­bi­tions, pub­lic com­mis­sions and pub­li­ca­tions through­out Europe, North Amer­i­ca and Asia. In addi­tion, Kosuth has par­tic­i­pat­ed in five edi­tions of Doc­u­men­ta in Kas­sel and five edi­tions of the Venice Biennale.

Awards include the Men­zione d’Onore at the Venice Bien­nale in 1993 and the Cheva­lier de l’ordre des Arts et des Let­tres from the French gov­ern­ment in 1993. In 2003 he received the Aus­tri­an Republic’s high­est hon­our for accom­plish­ments in sci­ence and cul­ture, the Dec­o­ra­tion of Hon­our in Gold for ser­vices to the Repub­lic of Aus­tria. In 2012 he was induct­ed into the Roy­al Bel­gian Academy.

Pub­lic col­lec­tions include:​The Muse­um of Mod­ern Art, New York; The Tate Gallery, Lon­don; The Whit­ney Muse­um of Amer­i­can Art, New York; Nation­al Gallery of Vic­to­ria, Mel­bourne; Gal­le­ria Nazionale d’Arte Mod­er­na, Rome; Muse­um of Con­tem­po­rary Art, Syd­ney and The Lud­wig Col­lec­tion, Ger­many. His work is includ­ed in most muse­um col­lec­tions across the Unit­ed States, Europe, Aus­tralia and Asia.
