Joseph Kosuth is one of the pioneers of Conceptual and installation art, initiating language based works and appropriation strategies. At the heart of his pursuit is investigating the production, relationship, and role of language and meaning through art.
For more than 50 years, Kosuth’s works have taken the form of installations, museum exhibitions, public commissions and publications throughout Europe, North America and Asia. In addition, Kosuth has participated in five editions of Documenta in Kassel and five editions of the Venice Biennale.
Awards include the Menzione d’Onore at the Venice Biennale in 1993 and the Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government in 1993. In 2003 he received the Austrian Republic’s highest honour for accomplishments in science and culture, the Decoration of Honour in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria. In 2012 he was inducted into the Royal Belgian Academy.
Public collections include:The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Tate Gallery, London; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Rome; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and The Ludwig Collection, Germany. His work is included in most museum collections across the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia.
