ANNA SCHWARTZ GALLERY TO CLOSE AND REOPEN AS NEW ENTITY:
ANNA SCHWARTZ PROJECTS
After four decades, Anna Schwartz Gallery announces a new name and a new direction: Anna Schwartz Projects.
Located in Melbourne’s Flinders Lane, Anna Schwartz Gallery will cease operating in its current form after the forthcoming John Nixon exhibition ‘Artist of the Monochrome 1968 – 2020’, which concludes on 13 December 2025, and will reopen in 2026 as a new entity, Anna Schwartz Projects.
Anna Schwartz Projects will present an occasional and dynamic roster across forms including installation, performance, talk, publishing and music. It will build on the gallery’s uncompromised conceptual position and contribution to culture. It will embrace experimental approaches to art practice with a programme that is entirely project and event based offering a particular experience.
The decision to change the focus of the gallery is driven by a desire to revitalise the current structure in response to the changing landscape in Australia.
“It has been a great privilege to work alongside artists from all over the world, to present and to further their work in Australia and overseas. It is gratifying to witness how the reception of art has matured in this country compared to the small monocultural world of contemporary art in the early eighties, and I am proud to have contributed to this expansion alongside many great artists” — Anna Schwartz AM
Anna Schwartz Projects will work with collections and facilitate commissions, and will continue to assist artists with advice and visibility, collaborating with other galleries and institutions in supporting their practices.
The new entity will occupy the second level of the same address on Flinders Lane.
