The Conversation Hour: Artist Candice Breitz renames NGV exhibit Wilson Must Go’

Steve Martin
ABC Radio Melbourne, 14 December 2017
Steve Martin is filling in for Jon Faine. His co-host is Dr Helen Szoke, the Chief Executive of Oxfam Australia. Helen was the Federal Race Discrimination Commissioner, and Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner. She recently returned from visiting Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazaar (Bangladesh, where they have fled from Myanmar). … Their first guest is singer Kylie Auldist (The Bamboos, Cookin’ On 3 Burners, solo). You can catch her tonight at the Caravan Music Club with Stephen Cummings & Jon Von Goes, on Friday lunchtime at Basement Discs (Block Arcade), this Saturday (16thDecember 2017) at Belleville (Globe Alley, off Little Bourke Street), on New Year’s Eve in Federation Square, and on Saturday 20th Jan 2018 at the Melbourne Recital Centre (Rock a Bye Baby). Then they are joined by Candice Breitz and Brodie Neill, who both have pieces in the NGV Triennial exhibition. Candice is a Berlin based South African artist, and her work is the video instillation Love Story (featuring Julianne Moore & Alec Baldwin), which she has renamed Wilson Must Go in protest at the security firm’s work at the Manus Island and Nauru asylum seeker detention centres. Wilson provides security for the NGV. Brodie is a London based Tasmanian designer and his work is the table Gyro (featuring fragments of ocean plastic waste). The NGV Triennial, with work by more than 100 artists and designers from 32 countries, is on at NGV International (St Kilda Rd) from Friday (15th December 2017) to April 2018
