The Sea Between A and I

‘The Sea Between A and I’ reflects on the space between Australia and Indonesia. Produced through a combination of factual research and intuitive response, it references asylum seeker voyages between the two countries and their reporting in the media.
The needlepoints are based on images of the sea as mediated through Google Earth. Louisa Bufardeci has investigated the approximate location of reported incidents and looked in the abstracted imagery of the water for shapes that could be figures or that might relate to the body. Screenshots become manipulated images, which become needlepoint charts and then actual needlepoints: an abstracting and constraining process that mirrors the increasingly abstract reporting on events in the region.
