‘The Sea Between A and I’ reflects on the space between Aus­tralia and Indone­sia. Pro­duced through a com­bi­na­tion of fac­tu­al research and intu­itive response, it ref­er­ences asy­lum seek­er voy­ages between the two coun­tries and their report­ing in the media.

The needle­points are based on images of the sea as medi­at­ed through Google Earth. Louisa Bufarde­ci has inves­ti­gat­ed the approx­i­mate loca­tion of report­ed inci­dents and looked in the abstract­ed imagery of the water for shapes that could be fig­ures or that might relate to the body. Screen­shots become manip­u­lat­ed images, which become needle­point charts and then actu­al needle­points: an abstract­ing and con­strain­ing process that mir­rors the increas­ing­ly abstract report­ing on events in the region.
