Lay­er­ings

‘Lay­er­ings’ express­es Jen­ny Wat­son’s char­ac­ter­is­tic vignettes; her inti­mate but uni­ver­sal per­son­al expe­ri­ences; the strug­gles of life abroad from home; the small tri­umphs of social inter­ac­tion and the anx­i­ety of voca­tion. Paint­ed on col­lec­tions of tex­tiles acquired dur­ing her trav­els, Wat­son’s dif­fuse, min­i­mal images con­vey frag­ments of per­son­al­i­ty between opaque and trans­par­ent lay­ers of fab­ric. The par­tial nar­ra­tives played out by Wat­son’s eco­nom­i­cal­ly-ren­dered fig­ures float between rich­ly-tex­tured chif­fons and organ­zas. With a light hand and inci­sive wit, Wat­son imbues moments of the every­day with a cin­e­mat­ic qual­i­ty, giv­ing poet­ic expres­sion to the minor dra­mas of ordi­nary life.
