Erwin Wurm
Crap Head
22nd February – 17th May 2014
Anna Schwartz Gallery Carriageworks
In this seemingly traditional exhibition of sculptures, photographs and video works, Austrian artist Erwin Wurm’s interrogation of the very definition of sculpture is applied not only to human beings, but also to objects. employing a range of materials: wood, Styrofoam, aluminium, paint, bronze and textiles, and in his photographs and video works, Wurm objectifies deeply emotional and psychological conditions using situations of the body. in this anthropomorphising of the object he unsettles traditional histories and expectations, creating a sense of tension and danger. humour also permeates his oeuvre, but underpinned by a fierce critique of consumer society, complacency and contemporary culture.
The One Minute Sculptures, to be performed by gallery visitors, are short durational actions with a symbolic enduring implication. These works, although seemingly humorous, like the other images, offer a meditation on human existence.
