Biography

Born La Coruña, Spain 1965

Lives and works in London, United Kingdom

Angela de la Cruz completed undergraduate studies at Goldsmiths College, London in 1994 and a Masters in Sculpture and Critical Theory at Slade School of Art, London in 1996. She has also studied at Chelsea College of Art, London in 1990 and at Santiago de Compostela, Spain in 1987.

De la Cruz is known for her slashed and crumpled painted canvases and deconstructed furniture that comment on the demise of painting and modernism. The artist creates monochromatic canvases and then manipulates, warps and vandalises them. Through the deformed paintings de la Cruz asserts herself against the weight of art history, leaving the viewer with the residue of her violence.

Public collections include: Tate Collection (London), British Council Collection (United Kingdom), Contemporary Art Society (United Kingdom), Fundacion La Caixa Fundación (Barcelona), National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne), GOMA / Queensland Art Gallery (Brisbane), FRAC, Nord Pas de Calais (Dunkerque), University Collection (Bruxelles); as well as private and corporate collections in Australia, Europe, and the United States.
